Myself, My Mother and James Mole w/PWC will be at Skookumchuck Narrows on September 21st 22nd 23rd 24th of 2010.

There will be two ridable tides each day. A morning and afternoon. The AM tides are the ascending tides that start later in the AM each day. They start on the 21st at about 7 knots and reach about 11 knots on the 24th.
The PM tides are descending and start at about 11 knots and go down to about 8 on the 24th.

These tides are not like the "Respect" event which saw some of the largest tides of the year. These are very manageable. The 11 knot tides will still scare you though.

I believe Negs and Jake are coming and maybe Bjoern Lob and Gerry and Flo, etc... from Munich. Some homies of mine from SF.

This is not an event this is a gathering and EVERYONE is invited. James Mole is doing the water safety as a favor and only charging me 400 bucks(BRO DEAL)for 4 days of work. So if you come depending on the number of people will be the split of his service. More people less cash each.

If you make it there you will be welcomed by me and be part of the crew.

We will help with airport pick up and ride share etc.....
If you want to come contact me or Negs.

Aloha
Mack

I am in. This is the week following Slam the Kan and I can think of no better finale. Jacob and I will drive out from Alberta. If any of the international crew wants to come to Slam the Kan, they are more then welcome, as are you ... hmm, think you could come this year? We'd get you back to meet up with your plans.

For any travellers reading this. GOOGLE TRANSLATE

If you come to Canada, you should think of coming to Calgary, Alberta for Slam the Kan. It is our little annual surf party. Good people, good times, beautiful location but shitty waves : ) We' put you up and then drive you out to Skookumchuck, British Columbia. It's about 12 - 16 hours through the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

Stoke & Flow!

The whirlpools will probably be significant and can hold you down for some time. My training for Respect in 2007 was to front crawl a lap then immediately dive and hold my breath for as long as possible. If you come, you should train your swimming and your ability to hold you breath after excursion.

Dealing with Whirlpools
If you're gonna hit a whirlpool and can't get away from it, and are past the point where a rescue is possible (so basically the worst case scenario), try to figure out which way it's turning.
Swim towards the side that is moving downstream.
If you are in the whirlpool and spinning around, swim/paddle with the rotation and, with luck, you'll keep enough speed to stay on the edges until the whirlpool collapses.

If you're gonna get sucked down, get a really good breath, tuck into a ball, and let it flush you down, you can't fight it. Whirlpools tend to move downstream and get smaller as they go, so when it peters out it should let you go. As soon as you start floating up, swim for the surface on a downstream angle, because sometimes there is another right on it's tail that will grab you before you reach the surface. Big whirlpools can hold you down for 10seconds or more, so be ready for a good dunking.
